When to use Contra
Only when money moves between your own cash and bank accounts. Nothing is earned or spent, so no party or expense ledger is involved.
| Situation | Dr (money comes in here) | Cr (money goes out from here) |
|---|---|---|
| Cash deposited in bank | Bank | Cash A/c |
| Cash withdrawn from bank | Cash A/c | Bank |
| Transfer between two banks | Receiving bank | Paying bank |
Steps
- Press F4 anywhere, press C on the Gateway, or click Contra. Press F2 to change the Date.
- On line 1 choose Dr, pick the Bank / Cash Account receiving the money and enter the amount in Debit (₹).
- On line 2 choose Cr, pick the account paying it out and enter the same amount in Credit (₹).
- Enter the Reference / Chq No. and a narration, or click Auto-Write.
- The Difference must show ₹0.00. Click Save Contra. Clear starts over, and Add Line handles a split across more accounts.
Where it shows up
Both accounts update at once in the Cash & Bank Book. The bank side also appears in Bank Reco until you enter its bank date.
Paid a supplier directly from the bank? That is a Payment (F5), not a Contra. Atulya Intelligence flags contras that touch a party ledger.
